My husband and I are both long term and short term rental landlords. Our most recent tenant moved on after 8 years, needless to say, that property had a lot of “deferred maintenance”, just ask the neighbors. Long term properties get maintained only after the tenant moves out. The long term property takes minimal time and expense. The guests pay the state of CT 15% hotel tax for the luxury of staying in a short term rental, 0% for the long term renter.

In our short term rental properties, my husband and I spend hours daily with a full staff near by, keeping our STR pristine! The season is short, so we still have to carry the property through the winter; It’s a labor of love.

Its sad after being decimated by COVID, Groton/Mystic will take a worst hit when Groton sends the booming tourist industry packing to eat, drink, and sleep at the casinos. If The Chamber of Commerce, merchants, trades people, and business’ don‘t get behind saving the STR business, they deserve to lose them to the casino, because who wants to stay in a mini hotel in Mystic when they can be at THE LARGEST CASINO IN THE WORLD!
The Indians will be happy to take their money! And good for them!
